Every tool the real exam gives you

The PSAT/NMSQT is taken on a screen with its own set of tools. Practicing on paper — or on a site without them — means meeting them for the first time on the day that counts.

Split-screen passages

Passage on the left, question on the right, just like the Bluebook app — so reading practice feels like the real thing.

Built-in graphing calculator

Graph equations, find intersections, zeros and vertices, or switch to the scientific keypad — available on every Math question.

Math reference sheet

The same area, volume and special-triangle formulas you get on test day, one click away throughout Math.

Mark for review & eliminator

Bookmark questions to come back to and cross out options you have ruled out — then check your work before you submit.

Score + Selection Index

See an estimated 320–1520 total, both section scores and your National Merit Selection Index the moment you finish, broken down by all eight skill domains.

Every option explained

A written explanation for every question, the reason each wrong option is wrong, and a strategy tip you can use next time.

How it works

Three steps to a higher score

01

Sit a full test, properly timed

Four modules, 98 questions, 134 minutes and a real 10-minute break — with the same on-screen tools you will have on test day.

02

Get your score and Selection Index

An estimated 320–1520 and National Merit Selection Index the moment you finish, plus a breakdown by module and by each of the eight skill domains.

03

Fix what cost you points

Every question has a written explanation, a reason each wrong option is wrong, and a strategy tip. Then retake and watch it climb.

Every question type

Nothing on test day you haven't seen

Our tests use every kind of question the PSAT/NMSQT does, in the proportions it does — including data tables and the questions where you type your own answer.

R&W

Words in context

Choose the most logical and precise word or phrase for the blank.

R&W

Text structure & purpose

What a sentence does in a passage, or what the whole passage is for.

R&W

Cross-text connections

Two short texts on one topic: how would the author of one respond to the other?

R&W

Central ideas & details

The main idea, or a detail the passage states or implies.

R&W

Command of evidence — textual

Which quotation or finding would best support or weaken a claim?

R&W

Command of evidence — quantitative

Read a data table to complete an argument accurately.

R&W

Inferences

Which choice most logically completes the text?

R&W

Boundaries

Punctuation between and within sentences: periods, semicolons, colons, dashes, commas.

R&W

Form, structure & sense

Agreement, verb forms, pronouns, modifiers and possessives.

R&W

Transitions

The logical link between two sentences.

R&W

Rhetorical synthesis

Use a student's bulleted notes to accomplish a specific goal.

Math

Multiple choice

Four options, one correct — about three quarters of the Math questions.

Math

Student-produced response

No options: you type the answer — a whole number, decimal, fraction or negative.

Math

Data & tables

Word problems built on a table of values, a sample, or a rate.

Sample question

Judge the quality before you pay

Every question comes with an explanation that tells you why the other options are wrong, not just which one is right.

  • A written explanation on every question
  • A reason each wrong option is wrong
  • A strategy tip for next time
Math — Module 1Multiple choice

A line in the xy-plane passes through the points (2, 5) and (6, 17). What is the y-intercept of this line?

  • A−1Correct
  • B1
  • C3
  • D5

Explanation

First find the slope: (17 − 5) ÷ (6 − 2) = 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Then substitute one point into y = mx + b. Using (2, 5): 5 = 3(2) + b, so b = −1. The trap is stopping at the slope and choosing C — on the PSAT the wrong options are usually built from correct intermediate steps, so read what the question actually asks for before you choose.

What the PSAT tests

Scored the way College Board reports it

Your results break down across the same eight content domains the official score report uses, so you know exactly where your next points are.

National Merit

The number that matters in eleventh grade

National Merit Scholarship Corporation does not look at your 1520-point total. It looks at your Selection Index, where Reading and Writing counts twice. Every full test you sit here gives you an estimated index alongside your score, so you know which section moves you closer to Commended or Semifinalist.

Selection Index

Math

Index

Ranges from 48 to 228. Cut-offs are set by NMSC each year, and Semifinalist cut-offs differ by state.

What we are upfront about

Our questions are written to SAT difficulty

The PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT share one format, one set of question types and one score scale, and the PSAT is pitched slightly easier. Our tests are built to the SAT end of that range, so expect test day to feel a little easier than our hardest modules, never harder. We think that is the right way round.

The exact line between the two routes is ours

Like the real PSAT/NMSQT, each test has a harder and an easier Module 2 and your Module 1 result picks one. College Board does not publish where it draws that line, so ours is set from published analyses of its official practice tests. A student near the line could be routed differently on test day.

Your 320–1520 score and Selection Index are estimates

Turning raw answers into an official scaled score needs College Board's equating for the exact form you sat, which is not published. We convert your raw score with a curve modeled on released practice tests and show it as an estimate with a range — close enough to track progress and your National Merit standing, not a promise of a test-day number.

What students and parents say

Real scores, from real students and parents

Students who sat the full-length tests before test day, and the parents who watched their scores climb.

“I worked through these tests for most of junior year and went from a 1130 to a 1390 on the real PSAT. Honestly I did not expect that. Most of what I saw on test day followed the same patterns I had already practiced.”
Lisa WalkerCollege freshman
“I have sat a lot of exams in my career and I still rate this 12 out of 10. Both my kids used it before their PSAT. It looks and feels like the real test app and the explanations are the best part. I would send any family here.”
James BrewingtonParent of two PSAT test takers
“I completed all 50 practice tests and finished every one of them. Seeing the estimated score after each one kept me going and I always knew which area was costing me points. I recommend this to anyone sitting the PSAT.”

How long is the PSAT/NMSQT?

98 questions in 134 minutes of testing — two hours and fourteen minutes — plus a 10-minute break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. It is split into four modules, each with its own clock. When a module's time runs out it closes, finished or not. Our practice tests are timed exactly the same way.

Is the PSAT the same as the SAT?

Almost. Since the move to digital testing, the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT have the same structure — four adaptive modules, 98 questions, 134 minutes — the same question types, the same calculator and reference sheet, and the same Bluebook app. The differences are the score scale (320–1520 instead of 400–1600), a slightly lower difficulty ceiling, and the National Merit Selection Index that only the PSAT/NMSQT produces. Practice for one is practice for the other.

Do I get a score and a Selection Index?

Yes — estimated ones. The moment you finish you see an estimated total from 320 to 1520, a 160–760 estimate for each section with a likely range, and the National Merit Selection Index those section scores give: Reading and Writing twice, plus Math, divided by ten, on a 48–228 scale. Only College Board can produce an official score for a real test form, so treat ours as a close estimate for tracking progress, not a guarantee.

What score do I need for National Merit?

National Merit is decided by the Selection Index, not the total, and only on the PSAT/NMSQT taken in eleventh grade. Commended Student recognition has needed an index in the low-to-mid 200s in recent years, and the Semifinalist cut-off is set state by state, usually somewhere from the low 200s to the low 220s. National Merit Scholarship Corporation publishes the exact figures each year. Our National Merit page explains how it works.

Are your practice tests adaptive like the real PSAT?

Yes. Every test has two versions of each Module 2, a harder one and an easier one, just like the real PSAT/NMSQT. How you do on Module 1 of a section decides which one you get, and you are not told which while you are testing. Your estimated score then reflects the route: the harder module is the only way to the top of the scale. College Board does not publish exactly where it draws the line between the two, so ours is an estimate from its official practice tests.
